Coach Chase enters his sixth season as coach of the Lancer volleyball program (fifth at the helm). In his tenure here at WSC he has coached two players named rookie of the year in the MASCAC and several First-Team and Second-Team All-Stars. Most recently the 2008 team was invited to play in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ECAC New England Division III Championships. This was the first post-season invitation for the team in over a decade.
He has been involved with volleyball for more than 20 years. Coach Chase was the assistant coach at Becker College for three years. He runs a coed volleyball league in the Central Massachusetts area and actively participates in several leagues both as a player and league coordinator.
Coach Chase has coached several different Bay State Games teams.
Most notably:
• In 2009, he coached the Boy’s Scholastic team to their
first silver medal in the 28 year history of the Bay State
Games.
• In 2008, he coached the Boy’s Scholastic team to their
first medal (bronze) ever in the 27 year history of the Bay State
Games. The team also won the sportsmanship award which is given to
a team in each division that shows sportsmanship throughout the
tournament.
• In 2003, he coached the Women’s Open team to the
silver medal which was the first silver medal ever won by the team
in the 22 year history of the games.
• In 2002, he coached the Women’s Open team to the gold
medal which was the first gold medal ever won by the team in the 21
year history of the games.
Coach Chase is a graduate of the University of Lowell with a BS
degree in Computer Science. He is a Senior Software Engineer
at a local company.
Coach Castell will return for her fourth season on the Lancer sidelines this fall for the women's volleyball team. Coach Castell, who graduated in 2005, was one of the finest athletes to pass through Worcester State in many years. A standout volleyball player for the Lancers, she was a two-year captain and was selected as a 1st Team All-MASCAC setter her junior and senior seasons.
The Fall River native was also an excellent softball player for the Lancers as she was a standout catcher and potent offensive player. Her senior season she was selected to the 2005 ECAC Division III New England Softball 2nd Team in a balloting of New England coaches. She was a 1st Team All-MASCAC selection three times in her career and as a freshman was named MASCAC Rookie of the Year. Coach Castell also played a season of basketball her freshman year where she was chosen the MASCAC Rookie of the Year, as well. As a sophomore and junior, she was a member of the indoor track team.
For all of her accomplishments, she was selected as the
Worcester State College senior female athlete of the year.
