Coach Kapenas begins her second year at the helm of the Worcester State Softball program after she was previously an assistant under head coach Lynne Olsen for the last six seasons. Olsen retired after the 2007 season after compiling a career record of 329-278-2 her 21 year career.
Kapenas, a 1992 graduate from Fitchburg State, was a standout field hockey player for the Falcons from 1989-91 while she also played basketball in the winter. After she transferred to Fitchburg from MCLA (North Adams State) in her sophomore year, Kapenas finished her career with 32 goals, 17 assists and 81 points which are second, fourth and third All-Time at Fitchburg State, respectively. In her sophomore year she set the single-season school record for points (26) and goals (17) before breaking her own points record in her junior year (32).
Kapenas received her Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology
with a minor in secondary education from Fitchburg State.
Coach Ruffo enters her second year as an assistant coach at Worcester State College. Ruffo brings over 12 years of softball coaching experience and running clinics with her to the Lancers.
Ruffo started her coaching career as the head coach of the Worcester Twisters, a U-16 team located in Worcester, and she coached the squad from 1997-2000. In every year she coached, the team qualified for the NSA New England Tournament and in 1999 and 2000 the team won the NSA State Championships. In 2000 the Twisters were the National Runners-up.
While she coached the Twisters, Ruffo had a two year stint as the assistant coach of the varsity squad from 1997-99 at St. Peter-Marian and she also had a one year stop as an assistant at Holy Cross in the 1999-2000 season.
Ruffo assumed duties as the head varsity coach of the softball team at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough from 2000 to 2006. Her teams were garnered in the offseason with the MID WACH A Sportsmanship Award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 while her 2004 squad was honored with the State Sportsmanship Award.
From 1998 to the present, Ruffo also has experience running or assisting several softball clinics which have included: The Holden Softball League (Director: 1998-2000) and the Home Run Club (Director: 1998-2000), The Northbridge Little League Club (2003), RBI-Riley Baseball Instruction (Instructor: 2004-2007), Central Mass Elite Softball Clinics (Owner/Director: 2005-present), and The Bancroft School Summer Softball Clinics (Director: 2006-present).
Ruffo received her BA in Marketing and Management from Boston
College in 1999 and her MBA from Assumption in 2006. Since 2000 she
has taught Economics at Algonquin Regional High school.
Coach Cote, was a standout defensive first baseman Assumption as she finished with a career batting average of .457 and .690 slugging percentage and was also ranked among the leaders in runs (113), hits (205), singles (143), doubles (35), triples (9), home runs (18), stolen bases (52), runs batted in (128) and batting average (.457).
Coach Cote was selected a first-team all-star four times by the coaches in the Northeast-10 Conference and three times (1993, 94, 95) by the ECAC Division North and New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association. She was team Most Valuable Player and captain in 1995. Coach Cote batted .393, .547, .470 and .475 and she hammered nine homers with 47 runs batted in during her senior year.
Coach Cote has also served as an assistant softball coach at Nichols (1999), an assistant basketball coach with the South Central Sharks (Oxford, MA) (2000 01) and with the South Central Xplosion (Thompson, CT) (2006) softball team.
Coach Cote recieved her BA in Psychology in 1995 and she also went to high school at Coyle-Cassidy in Taunton.
