Dave Lindberg enters his 16th year as the head coach of the men's basketball team just five wins away from the 200 win plateau (195-201). Since taking the reins of the program in 1994, Coach Lindberg has instructed 27 All-MASCAC Players which have included two rookies of the year, nine first-team players, one conference player of the year and five 1,000 point scorers.
In 1999-2000 Coach Lindberg was also selected by his peers as the MASCAC Coach of the Year after he helped guide the squad to its first regular season championship and tied the program record for wins in a season (19). Overall, Lindberg has directed seven of his 16 teams to the conference tournament championship game. In 1997-98 and in 1999-2000, both teams were selected to the ECAC New England Basketball Tournament.
A 1991 graduate of Worcester State, Coach Lindberg was a three-year starter and captain for the basketball team and he was also a member of the WSC football and track squads. Following his graduation, Coach Lindberg served as an assistant coach for four years under Coach Tom Moore, who was an assistant at UConn and current head coach of Quinnipiac. Coach Lindberg helped guide the 1992-93 Lancers to the ECAC's and in 1993-94 the squad won the MASCAC Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Lindberg emphasizes the importance of toughness, rebounding and defense. Coach Lindberg expects his players to get better every day in practice, to focus on the next day's task, do well in the classroom as student-athletes and to represent the college the right way.
In the past the Lancers have competed in several regional and far away tournaments to play top-notch competition. In 1997-98 the squad went on an eight-day trip to Hawaii to face two DII teams and in 2000 the team went to the V Foundation Classic in Salem, Virginia. WSC has also competed in the Menards Holiday Classic in Eau Clair, Wisconsin, the Mary-Hardin Baylor Tournament in Austin, Texas, and the Washington University Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. This season the team will play in both the Williams Holiday Tournament and at the Rochester Institute of Technology tournament.
In 1997, Coach Lindberg started the first WSC Basketball camp and instructional clinic on campus. Coach Lindberg also helped lead teams during the Bay State games to silver and bronze medals in 1997 and 1996, respectively. Coach Lindberg has been a congressman for the National Association of Basketball Coaches for the last eight years and he is a former President of the Worcester Area Basketball Coaches Association. Over the summer he was recently appointed to the NCAA New England Division III Regional selection committee and the NABC All-Star National Committee that will select the teams for the Division III All-Star game which plays the morning of the National Championship.
Coach Lindberg is an Assistant Athletic Director on-campus, is a member of the WSC Hall of Fame Committee and he is responsible for remodeling the Oscar Larsson Fitness Center in the Gymnasium building. Coach Lindberg also helped create the MASCAC DVD/Video Exchange conference policy.
Coach Lindberg lives in Dudley, MA with his wife Melissa with
his two children, Victoria and Nicholas.
Don Cushing begins his eighth year on the Worcester State
coaching staff as an assistant to Dave Lindberg. Cushing, who
played for the Lancers from 1962 to 1966, was a 1,000 point scorer
and grabbed 1,000 rebounds in his career. He also served as captain
and won the team MVP award his senior season. In 1988 he was
inducted into the Worcester State Athletic Hall of Fame for his
athletic excellence.
Cushing has an extensive coaching resume in both the high school
and college ranks. He was the head coach of Bartlett High School
from 1966-1977 and then became the head coach of Nichols College
from 1977 to 1982 before returning to Bartlett as coach from 1983
to 1998. Cushing won 15 league titles and reached the state
tournament 21 times including three appearances in the semifinals.
He finished his high school coaching career with a record of
405-162 and in 2003 he was elected to the Massachusetts High School
Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Cushing graduated from Worcester State with a degree in
education and received his M.Ed from WSC in education in 1970. An
educator at Bartlett High School for 35 years, he served as a
teacher, assistant principal, athletic director and coach at
Bartlett during different stages if his career.
In recent years, Coach Cushing has served as the scouting
coordinator for the WSC women’s team and, after retiring from
the education field, returned in 2001 as a Development Officer for
the Alumni department heading up the Lancer Club. He has also
remained active in the Hall of Fame serving as Chairman and now as
a member of the Hall of Fame Committee. In 2007, Cushing
was honored with the Paul N. Johnson Award presented for his
contribution to basketball in Central Massachusetts.
A Lancer to the core, Cushing’s wife, brother and two
daughters are all WSC graduates.
Coach Steiner is entering his fourth year on Head Coach
Dave Lindberg's men's basketball staff.
Coach Steiner is an accomplished basketball coach in central
Massachusetts. After playing and graduating from St. John’s
High School in Shrewsbury, he matriculated to Assumption College
where he played basketball for Joe O’Brien. Steiner graduated
from Assumption in 1981.
Coach Steiner joined the Assumption College basketball staff for
the 2000-2001 season and was part of a tremendous turnaround the
following season as the Greyhounds improved from a 9-17 record in
2000-2001 to 24-6 in 2001-2002 where they were ranked first in the
NE-10 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
From 2002-2004, Coach Steiner was the head basketball coach at the
Bancroft School before taking the helm of the Becker College
Hawks.
Coach Steiner is the owner of Steiner Sign Company and is has been
married for 23 years to his wife Cathy. The couple has 4 sons;
Franz, John, Kurt and Erich.
