Head Coach Brien Cullen enters the 2010 season with a 136-108 overall varsity record (.557). Coach Cullen is the only coach the Lancers have had since the he brought the program to the varsity level in the fall of 1985.
In the two years preceding their varsity status, Coach Cullen led the Lancers to a 19-3 overall record including an 11-0 season that earned Worcester State the 1984 National Club Championship.
The program was elevated to NCAA Division III varsity status in 1985 and joined the New England Football Conference. The Lancers made an immediate impact on New England football finishing 5-0 in their first year.
Cullen's 1987 and 1988 teams won the South Division of the New England Football Conference with 7-2 and 7-3 records, respectively. 1995 was also an outstanding year for the Lancers when they captured the NEFC title for the first time with an 8-0 record and earned their first ECAC post-season playoff bid. The team finished the season 9-2.
The 1996 team won the NEFC for the second consecutive year. The Lancers were 8-0 in conference play and 10-0 for the regular season. The Lancers played an ECAC playoff game with national powerhouse Ithaca College and dropped a tough 27-21 decision to the Bombers. Worcester State won 19 straight regular season games before dropping the opener in the 1997 season. Cullen was named the New England Football Writers Division II & III Coach of the Year for his efforts and received the same honor from the Gridiron Club of Boston.
1997 saw the Lancers finish as co-champions of the New England Football Conference (NEFC) giving Worcester State their third straight title and a third straight ECAC post-season playoff game. They posted an overall record of 8-3, including a 7-1 conference total.
Coach Cullen has been named NEFC Coach of the Year in the 1987, 1993, 1995 and 2000 seasons. In 1996, The American Football Coaches Magazine named Cullen the Division III National Defensive Coordinator of the Year. The National Football Foundation honored Coach Cullen as a contributor to football in 1997. In 2004 Coach Cullen was honored by the ECAC football officials with the Murray Lewis Award honoring his contributions to football in the region. He also traveled to England and Scotland in 1998 and was an assistant coach with an All-Star team consisting of players from Division I, II and III.
As an undergraduate at Worcester State, Coach Cullen was a
four-year starter for the Lancer club team and was named All-New
England his junior and senior years. As a senior he was the
team captain and selected the team's most valuable player
Coach Sullivan enters his fourth season as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since returning to the team in 2007. This is Coach Sullivan's second tour on the Lancer sideline having coached for Worcester State and Head Coach Brien Cullen from 2000-2001. Coach Sullivan was also promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2007 as well.
Before coming back to Worcester State, Sullivan had a six year
stint as the head coach at Framingham State. Prior to coaching at
WSC and FSC, Coach Sullivan began his collegiate career as the
offensive coordinator for UMass-Lowell.
Coach Sullivan began his coaching career in 1983 serving as
defensive coordinator for Marlboro High School and St. Bernard's.
Following that he was a head coach for 10 years most notably at
Keefe Tech in Framingham. In 1991 he was named coach of the
year at Keefe Tech and in 1992 was chosen to coach in the Shriner's
All-Star game. In 1994, while at Ayer High School, Coach
Sullivan was on the sidelines for the Central Mass All-Star
game.
Coach Sullivan is a 1985 graduate of UMass-Amherst and is
currently a history teacher at Wachusett Regional High School.
David DeAmato enters the second year of his second tour with the Lancers after he helped out the squad in 2004. DeAmato will take over duties as the special teams coordinator and the defensive backs coach.
DeAmato left WSC after that season and coached at Division I
Iona in 2005. Coach DeAmato is a 2003 graduate of Syracuse where he
started 24 straight games as the team's long snapper.
Coach Roberts enters his fourth season on the sidelines at Worcester State College. Coach Roberts, a 1995 graduate of Marist College, played on the MAAC championship team in 1994. Roberts also tried out for the New England Patriots and New York Jets as a placekicker and punter in the 1995-96 season.
In 2000 Roberts started his coaching career as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers at Curry College. After moving to Stonehill College for the 2001 season, Coach Roberts spent two years as an assistant defensive backs coach at UMass-Amherst before serving as the special teams coordinator and wide recievers coach at Assumption in 2004.
In 2005 and 2006, Roberts was the special teams coordinator, the
defensive backs and wide recievers coach at Becker. In 2006, the
Hawks led all of Division III in punt return average (20.29 yards)
and finished second in all divisions of college football.
Nat North enters his third season as the running backs coach. Before coaching with the Wildcats last season, Coach North spent the 2001 through the 2006 seasons at Fitchburg State. In 2004 and 2005 the Falcons won the New England Football Conference Bogan Division Title. In 2007, North was also an assistant at Gardner High.
Coach North is a 1999 graduate of Assumption. In his senior season he was a team captain and he was the male recipient of the William Cating Memorial Award for being the "most coachable" athlete by the other coaches in the department.
John Smith, a former Worcester State standout as a running back, begins his second year of coaching the Lancers. Coach Smith helped lead the first WSC varsity football squad in 1985 to a perfect 5-0 record while in 1987 he also helped lead the charge as the team captured a MASCAC Championship and a NEFC South Division title. Smith currently holds school records for rushes in a season (229) and career rushes (564) while he is second on the all-time list in rushing yards (2,608) and scoring (198). Smith also owns the single game rushing record of 239 yards and he is fourth all-time in all-purpose yardage (3,144).
Coach Smith was a team captain for three straight years while he
was named to the NEFC All-Conference football team three times.
Smith was also selected as a Pizza Hut All-American honorable
mention and he was the recipient of the Hal Chalmers Academic
Award, presented to the top student athlete in the NEFC in 1987.
Coach Smith was inducted into the Lancer Hall of Fame in 1993.
Justin Daniels begins his second year coaching at Worcester State after having success anchoring the offensive line as a player. Coach Daniels, a 2000 graduate of the University of Greenwich in London, played for several club football teams while living in the United Kingdom.
With the London O's, Coach Daniels helped the squad capture UK
National Championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Also in 1999,
Daniels helped the Huntfordshire Hurricanes capture the UK College
National Championship. In 2004, Coach Daniels won a UK Divisional
title with the Kent Exiles and he was also named the team's
offensive linemen of the year award as well. After the season,
Daniels moved to the United States in 2004.
In his third season with WSC, Devin Gates comes to the Lancers after he helped coach the Colorado Crush into the Arena League Playoffs in 2006. Before coaching the Crush, Coach Gates was the defensive backs coach at Fitchburg State in 2006 and the quarterbacks coach in 2004 and 2005.
In both years that Coach Gates coached the quarterbacks, the Falcons captured the New England Football Conference Bogan Division Crown. From 2001-2003 he also coached at North Middlesex Regional high.
As a player, Coach Gates had two stints playing quarterback at both Worcester State and Fitchburg. Coach Gates won the Super Bowl in 1996 while at Fitchburg High.
Coach Varrichione, has been coaching football for over 49 years. This is Coach Varrichione’s second tour with the Lancers having served under Coach Cullen from 1994 through 1999. Among Coach Varrichione’s stops have included stints at Dean College, Framingham State College, Harvard University, UMass-Amherst and high school jobs with Xaverian and Ashland High School where he was head coach.
Coach Varrichione is a graduate of UMass-Amherst and will coach
the defensive line this season.
